A Chinese Ghost Story (2011)

Plot: The story takes place on an ancient mountain – Black Mountain, when a group of workers come to construct a road, causing the ancient spirits, ghosts and humans to enter into conflict. Rumors of spirits causing trouble prompt the workers to leave the mountain, leaving only a hardworking young man by the name of Ning Cai Chen, a strong believer of science to stay on to construct the road for the villagers. However, an incident in Ning Cai Chen’s childhood is a memory he is afraid to recall – the sight of his father dying in the hands of an evil spirit.Xiao Qian is a young leopard cat spirit eager to outshine the grand fox spirit to gain the respect of the powerful century tree spirit. She volunteers to get rid of Ning Cai Chen only to realize that they share an intertwined fate and finds herself saving him instead.The old ghost hunter Summer Snow Wind Lightning sets foot upon the mountain to stop the spirits from creating mischief and to chase Ning Cai Chen off the mountain as he is afraid that the seal laid down on the mountain by his master will be destroyed. The spirit of Black Mountain will then be released and it will be catastrophic for mankind.Filled with hatred, the Black Mountain Spirit seeks to take revenge on mankind and swears to kill all couples in love. Unwilling to give up, Ning Cai Chen asks Xiao Qian to take the last resort of grabbing the demon stick from Xia Bing’ hand and destroying the Black Mountain spirit. Xiao Qian is faced with a difficult decision…

The Return of the Condor Heroes (2006) Rmvb/avi

Adapted from the novel by Jin Yong, this is a sequel to Legend of Condor Heroes and a prequel of sorts to Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre. The story concerns the adventures of Yang Guo, an orphaned boy in a mid-13th Century China.

Ice Kacang Puppy Love [2010]

Ice Kacang Puppy Love is straightforward and conventional, but that’s okay – really. An enjoyable and entertaining story that mixes a little bit of drama and comedy, the movie is set in the early nineties in a small town of Ipoh, Malaysia. Written and directed by singer Tan Kheng-Seong or better known as Ah Niu, the movie shares many similar love-at-first-sight and puppy love stories from our early childhood that never fails to put a smile on that face. You couldn’t help but to play along with the cast on a swirling emotional journey.
The story is simple – love should be not be a complicated issue – yet to show the

unconditional love, first time director, Ah Niu managed to stay away from getting too much of physical contact, except maybe innocent peck-on-the-lips in between shots or limited-contact hugs. At some point, it’s painful to watch especially those involving family-related relationship. While the movie can be happy-clappy at one tip, things can change pretty fast into heart-wrenching, tear duct-squeezing moment. When done right, everything seems flawless.

Angelica Lee Sinje turns in a predictably two-thumbs up performance in this movie. While getting some stars who are well in their 30s to play youngsters somewhere in their twenties and barely out of school might not look like a really good idea, but I’d say most of the actors here convincingly put on a great show playing kids over again. It clearly reminds you how life in those days are like – carefree, pressures from your parents and wanting to escape to the city to make it big.
Another commendable aspect is the cinematography. It’s surprising to see that shots were done so perfectly well, that one might have to do a double take to confirm its being made locally. Yes, no doubt the picture-perfect scenes are the one that drawn me into the movie, minus the star power. It’s mesmerising to watch how scenes unfold in front of you, almost like flipping on a picturesque album. In short, most of the shots are

very much conceptualised, with a lot of camera-experiments with lights and shadow.
Ice Kacang Puppy Love is a likable debut from the first-time director and another reminder that when done right, stories like this are never exhausted and are always welcome by both local and international moviegoers.

"Ice Kacang Puppy Love" is based on Taiwan-based Malaysian Ah Niu growing up in Penang. In this directorial debut, he also stars as the boy who is a little shy. It's love at first sight when a girl moves to his forsaken Penang village and he grows up with her through primary and secondary school. However, she's a bit of a tomboy who can fight off bullies while he's so timid that he can't even make coffee at his father's shop.
